Betty Jean Bocock was born October 31, 1931 in Fayetteville, Arkansas, as Betty Jean Holland and passed away March 11, 2011. In the late-1930s, Betty, like many other Oklahomans, moved from Oklahoma City to California with her mother, Ruby, and stepfather, Joseph McKee, in search of a family livelihood. Fortunately, she returned to Oklahoma City in the 1940s and graduated from Central High School in 1949. That year, she married Walter Charles Bocock, to whom she was married for 42 years until he predeceased her in death in 1991. Together they had three sons: Joseph (an Attorney, Oklahoma City), Michael (Oklahoma City) and David (a Pastor, Cresskill, NJ). She is survived by all her sons, her daughter-in-law, Denice (Court Appointed Special Advocate for Children, Oklahoma City); her mother, Ruby Addington (Oklahoma City); and her devoted partner of many years, Siegfried Caruthers.
Betty was a bright, vivacious person who at various times competed as a tournament square dancer, excelled at fishing and ballroom dancing, enjoyed bridge and did her best to be a steadfast wife, mother, and friend. In 1991 she began a career as a successful real estate broker in Oklahoma City. She also served as past president and was an active member of the Hospitality Club in addition to her support of many community charities, most notably the Salvation Army and the Jesus House. She has been a member of Pennsylvania Avenue United Methodist Church for almost 50 years. Visitation will be Sunday, March 13, from 9-4, at Smith & Kernke, NW 23rd.
