Katherine B. Ortmeier passed away at the age of 92, on February 5, 2015. Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 10, 2015, at St. Liborius Catholic Church in Polo, SD. The celebrant will be Father Dave Axtmann.

Visitation will be at the Crawford Funeral Chapel in Watertown on Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. with a 6:30 p.m. Scripture Wake Service. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Polo, SD.

Katherine was born February 22, 1922, to John and Florence (Kelley) Abernathy. She was their third child joining her sister Charlotte and brother John. They lived on a farm in the Highmore, SD, area, where three more children joined the family.

Her childhood was marred by the death of her dad when she was just 10 years old. Katherine went to school in Polo, SD, and that was where she met the love of her life, William “Bill” Ortmeier. After graduation Katherine taught school at Stephan, SD.

Bill and Katherine were married on June 5, 1944, at Stephan, SD, by Father Dan. They started their married life on the farm West of Polo. They farmed and raised 9 of their 11 children there. Katherine loved to garden and had a wonderful vegetable garden every year. They sold all of the farm equipment and their house then traveled between South Dakota and Reno, NV, until 1987, when they moved to Watertown to be closer to their son Bob.

Katherine was a wonderful homemaker; she did a lot of canning and baking for her family. She worked at St. Liborius School for 6 years. After moving to Watertown, she loved working at the Rummage Room at Holy Name Parish. She started making quilts around this time and we are sure that each of her children and grandchildren has at least one of her quilts.

Katherine spent the last 22 months of her life at Golden Living Care Center, her lifetime companion, Bill, was constantly at her side.

Katherine is survived by her husband, Bill, of Watertown; five daughters: Judi (John) Bokenfohr of St. Albert, Alberta Canada, Mary (Steve) Powers of Reno, NV; Gloria (John) Burns of Reno; Cammay (Brad) Baloun of Sioux Falls, SD, and Dianne Zweifel of Boise, ID; four sons: Kenneth (Judy) Ortmeier of Calahoo, Alberta Canada, Robert Ortmeier, Joseph (Vicki Rehder) Ortmeier, and William Joseph, Jr. and fiancé Brenda Osthlund, all of Watertown; 29 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; one brother, Lawrence (Shirley) Lynch of Highmore, SD; and two sisters: Marlys Cermack of Highmore, and Pat (Dom) Calvetti of Rapid City, SD.

She was preceded in death by two sons; one grandson; one great-granddaughter; her parents; four brothers; two sisters; and her step-dad, Leo Lynch.
