Florence was born in Terril, Dickinson Co., IA to Wesley Burley & Daisy Belle (Moon) Kelley. She was one of five children. The family came to South Dakota by covered wagon in 1903, and lived on farms in Cavour & Alpena. Florence got scarlet fever and Bright's disease at seven and went to live with her grandparents in Ree Heights, until the age of fourteen.

Florence married John W. Abernathy in 1917. The lived on Elm Creek which is south and east of Stephan, SD. They had seven children: Charlotte (Mrs. Dale Roalstad), John, Katherine (Mrs. William Ortmeier), Kenneth, George, Joseph (died at 4 months), Marllys (Mrs. Royal Cermak). Florence's first husband, John Abernathy, died in 1932.

In 1933, she married Leo L. Lynch. They lived on a farm 14 miles south and 2 west of Highmore, SD. They moved to Highmore in 1952. They were parents of 5 children: Leo Eugene, Lawrence H., Pat (Mrs. Dominic Calvetti), Raphael Lynch (killed in car accident in 1971), and Guen Etta (Mrs. David Axtmann). Leo L. Lynch died May 22, 1972.
