Kenneth Leo Abernathy, 83, Rapid City and formerly of Sturgis, died Monday, August 13, 2007, at his residence in Rapid City.

Kenneth was born February 5, 1924, at Highmore, SD, to William and Florence (Kelly) Abernathy. He was raised by Florence and Leo Lynch and attended boarding school in Polo, SD. After completing his education he farmed until joining the US Army where he served in Italy during World War II. Upon his honorable discharge he moved to Sturgis where he was employed in road construction.

He married Vivian Casteel in Sturgis on February 7, 1955.
Kenny was employed by Ft. Meade as an aide, mail clerk and in supply. He retired in 1985 from the laundry.

He married Sharon Merchen in Pierre on November 24, 1976.
After retirement, Kenny enjoyed his children and grandchildren. He and Sharon were custodians for the Presbyterian Church in Sturgis for several years. They also enjoyed traveling and camping.

Kenny was known for his recycling efforts as the "Can Man" in Sturgis.

Survivors include his wife Sharon Abernathy, Rapid City; one son Loren (Linda) Abernathy, Martin, SD; three daughters, Yvonne (Jon) Holter, Grand Forks, ND; Rachel (Damian) Woelfel, Seaforth, MN; Beth (Eric) Walz, Mitchell, SD; step-son, Ed (Sherri) Merchen, Newcastle, WY; step-daughter, Diana (Gerry) Lipford, Longmont, CO; one brother, Lawrence (Shirley) Lynch, Highmore, SD; three sisters, Katherine (Bill) Ortmeier, Watertown, SD; Marlys Cermak, Highmore, SD; Patricia (Dominic) Calvetti, Rapid City, SD; also nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Vivian, and nine siblings: Charlotte and GwenEtta, John, George, Raphael "Bud", Leo Eugene "Bunk", Joseph, and two infants.

Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday, August 17, 2007 at the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Sturgis with Father Arnold Kari officiating. Burial with military honors by the Sturgis Veterans Honor Guard follows at the Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis.
