Alfred "Vern" Balow, 71, Route 3, New Auburn, Town of Big Ben, died Sunday morning at St. Joseph's Hospital, Chippewa Falls. He was born Aug. 3, 1911 in the Town of Wheaton, the son of Jessie (Bailey) and Alfred Balow.

He married Gladys Lowe on Dec. 10, 1931 at Notre Dame Catholic Church in Chippewa Falls.

Alfred worked at Johnson Plastics Machinery in Chippewa Falls until retirement. He moved to Island Lake in 1975.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Alfred III of Fort Belvoir, Va.; William of Island Lake and Donald; one daughter, Mary Lou (Mrs. Marvin) Schneider of Chippewa Falls; six brothers, Norman, Lawrence and Earl, all of Eau Claire, Clarence of Island Lake, Lester of Bloomer and Ronald of Wheaton, Ill.; two sisters, Marie (Mrs. Wallace) Buchner of Cornell and Betty (Mrs. Art) Gunnef, Eau Claire; 19 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by bis parents and one son, Charles.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday at Notre Dame Catholic Church, with interment in Island Lake Cemetery.
