"The death of Stanley S. Backus, retired Hartwick hardware merchant and harness racing figure, occurred suddenly on Monday in Orlando, Fla. where he and Mrs. Backus were spending the winter months. His age was 72. Mr. Backus was born in Morris on February 28, 1884, a son of Ora and Clara (Wing) Backus. He graduated from Morris High School in 1901. He was actively engaged in farming for a number of years before buying the Augur Hardware Store in Hartwick which he operated until his retirement about four years ago. Mr. Backus also was president of the Hartwick Hatchery from 1922, when it was founded, until last June when it was sold. With his brother, Dr. H. W. Backus, also of Hartwick, and Frank Tingley of Afton, he owned a number of harness horses which have raced on the fair circuits in the east and also at Saratoga Raceway and other harness horse tracks ... Mr. Backus married the former Miss Mary Burpy in Oneonta in 1908. She survives together with the brother above mentioned. The body is scheduled to arrive in Oneonta Wednesday evening of this week, and funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Patterson Funeral Home in Hartwick with the Rev. Walter A. Miller, pastor of the Hartwick Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Morris Cemetery in the spring."
