"The death of Dr. Heman W. Backus of Hartwick, well-known dentist, who maintained an office in Cooperstown for 39 years, occurred Wednesday, April 22, at Memorial Hospital in Worcester, Mass., following a brief illness. He was 87 years of age and had spent the winter months in Florida. Dr. Backus was born October 13, 1882, in the Town of Pittsfield, the son of Ora and Clara (Wing) Backus. He was graduated from the University of Buffalo School of Dentistry, and opened an office in Buffalo, where he practiced for 12 years, of which, for six years he was on the staff of the dental school. He married Ida F. Scheer on April 9, 1908, in Buffalo. Mrs. Backus died April 20, 1964 ... There are no survivors. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 25, from the Patterson Funeral Home, Hartwick, with the Rev. Philip Peterman, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating.
