- U.S. DEPUTY MARSHAL KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY -

Samuel was born April 12, 1877, in Vanceboro, Craven, North Carolina, the firstborn son of John Franklin Lilly and Arminta Clementine Wiggins Lilly. He had seven known siblings.

Samuel was married three times; first, to Novella Elizabeth Thomas, they married December 14, 1902 in Carteret County, North Carolina; together they had three known children: Ora Elizabeth, Lynster D. and Novella Arminta. On October 6, 1911, Novella passed away. Later, Samuel married Mary Dixon on July 3 1912, in Carteret County, North Carolina. She passed away June 21, 1921. He then married Marie Weaver.

On September 12, 1918, his World War I Draft Registration Card describes him as medium height, stout build, gray hair and blue eyes. He was living in Morehead City, North Carolina, and employed as a mechanic. He was 40 years old at the time.

Samuel Lilly was a U.S. Deputy Marshal, killed in the line of duty. Deputy Marshal Lilly and Officer Leon George, of the Wilmington, North Carolina, Police Department were shot and killed July 29, 1924, after being ambushed approximately 15 miles from Wilmington, specifically, in Northwest, Brunswick, North Carolina. The two were returning for a liquor still raid when they were attacked as they crossed a creek. Both officers and Officer George's dog were shot at close range and killed. Four suspects were apprehended. Two of the convicted were father and son and were executed for the murders on the same day. Deputy Marshal Lilly had been with the agency for seven years and was survived by his wife, Marie and three children. He was 47 years old.
