History of Napa and Lake Counties, California: 1881

A. Kouns was born in Kentucky Dec 6, 1843. In 1859 he, in company with his mother, one brother and two sisters - his father being dead - crossed the plains to California. They arrived at Smith Ferry in October of the above year, and resided there until July 1861 when they came to Lake County. In November, 1871, the subject of this sketch settled on his present place, consisting of three hundred and twenty acres, located about ten miles south-east from Lower Lake, where he is engaged in wool growing. He married, July 5, 1868, Miss Rosette A. Copsey, who died October 21, 1873, leaving two children: Sarah L., and Jacob, who died March 16, 1874. He married secondly, March 12, 1876, Miss Emma A. DeWolf, foster child of C. L. Wilson, by whom he has two living children: Ira M. and Charles L.; they lost one Lucy M. *** (Bertha Kouns was born November 10, 1881 after this article was written)

Word has just been received of the death of A. R. Kouns at Middletown. The funeral will be held at this place on Thursday at 2 p.m.
Mr. Kouns had been a resident of this section for about 50 years and bore a reputation for truth and up-rightness which no one can gain-say.

Abraham Rice Kouns was the son of Abraham Kouns (buried in Kentucky at an unknown location) and Sarah (Rice) Kouns, Campbell, Parkinson, Copsey (buried at Lower Lake Cemetery) and the brother of Miranda (Kouns) Spencer Burger (buried at Hartley Cemetery) and Frances D. (Campbell) Hale (buried at the Middletown Cemetery).
