Sarah Ethel Chapman went by her second name, Ethel. She was born 24 Dec 1868 in Bethel, Newton County, Mississippi to parents Rev Archelus "Archie" Thomas Chapman 1848-1922 & Mary Adeline Walker 1847-1924. Ethel married Thomas Jefferson Stanford 10 May 1891 at Ben Wheeler, Van Zandt County, Texas. Ethel was the second wife of Thomas and together they had six children:Linnie Ethel; John Farmer; Jesse Matilda, Mary Elizabeth (Marie) & Samuel Haywood Stanford. Ethel died 1 July 1948, contrary to the date in the obituary, at Littlefield, Lamb County,Texas & according to her funeral records from Rix Funeral Home, she was laid to rest 4 July 1948, in the Morton Memorial Cemetery,Morton, Cochran County, Texas.

FUNERAL SERVICES ARE SLATED SUNDAY FOR MULESHOE WOMAN LITTLEFIELD, July 2 (Special)-Following an illness of five days, Mrs. Ethel Stanford, 79, died in a Littlefield hospital early this morning. She has made her home at Maple and Muleshoe with her children for several years. Funeral services will be conducted at the Baptist church in Enochs at 3:00 o'clock Sunday afternoon, with burial in Morton cemetery, Rix funeral home of Lubbock is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include four brothers, E.L., of Lobbock, T.L. of Sulpher Springs, L.F. of Odell and J.R. Chapman of Ben Wheeler; two sisters, Mrs. Alma Talley of Floresville and Mrs. May Palmer of Ben Wheeler; four sons, Sam of Levelland, Farmer of Muleshoe, E.H. of Ben Wheeler and L.R. Stanford of Visalia, Calif., five daughters, Mrs. Linnie Sullivan of Enochs, Mrs. Marie Williford of Maple, Mrs. T.C. Moss of Anson, Mrs. W.F. Moss of Mezdow and Mrs. J.P. Walker of Porterville, Calif., 25 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.
