Jacob was the husband of Elizabeth (Bowser) Lantz Carney (1852-1945). They were married in 1866 and had seven children including: Sarah Nevada, Harry H., Lillie May, Susan Isabelle, William and Lucy Lantz. They were married for 35 years. He was the son of Jacob Lantz and Regina (Brandel) Lantz.
Jacob enlisted in the Union Army on August 2, 1862 in Company A, 129th Illinois Infantry as a musician (specifically, a fifer). His regiment was tasked with guarding the railroad from Bowling Green, Kentucky to Gallatin, Tennessee. His regiment fought at Kenesaw Mountain and Atlanta. He was present at the Grand Review in Washington, D.C., and mustered out on June 8, 1865 in Washington, D.C.
