Demise of Samuel Lantz
Yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock occurred the death of Samuel Lantz at his residence, No. 912 East Ninth street of heart failure, a result of an attack of pneumonia. The deceased had been suffering for about 10 days.
The decedent was born in Lebanon, Pa., on the 23d day of February, 1834, and had attained the age of 66 years, 1 month and 13 days. He came to Muscatine in 1859, and has been a resident of this city ever since. When the civil war broke out he enlisted in Co. B, 35th Iowa, and served his country faithfully for three years and six months.
Upon his discharge from the service he returned to Muscatine and resumed his trade of shoemaker, and was in the employ of W. H. Stewart and his successors to the shoe business for nearly 40 years, being in the employ of Wilson & Cherry when taken with his fatal illness.
On July 14, 1867, he was united in marriage with Mary E. Spencer, who with four children deeply mourn his loss, the later being Mrs. F. J. Maher of Cleburne, Texas; Mrs. George Brown of this city, and William and Mabel at home. Mr. Lantz was a kind and affectionate husband and father, a good neighbor, an upright citizen, a man whose honor and integrity was never questioned. He will be sadly missed in the home and among his friends. One daughter, Nellie, preceded him in death a number of years ago. Deceased also leaves four grandchildren and three brothers and two sisters.
The funeral will be held from the house at 2 o'clock p.m. Sunday.
