The Carlstead surname was originally spelled "Karlstadt" and later "Carlstadt," "Carlsted" and "Carlstead." Christian Carlstead was born in Prussia (Bavaria, Germany) and came to the United States when he was thirteen years of age. A biography of Christian's daughter Christine's son William Carlstead Van Deventer says the Carlsteads originated from a later branch of a military family in Prussia.

About Christian Carlstead
Christian Carlstead passed away of pneumonia after driving in a rain storm in an open wagon from Huntsville to their farm near Mt. Arie close to Moberly, MO.

Daughter Sarah married shortly after her father's death.

Christian's wife Mary (Klink) Carlstead and daughters Cassie and Christine stayed on the farm for two years after Christian's death. Then they sold the farm and moved to Salisbury, MO.

Daughter Cassie attended Washington University in St. Louis to learn photography and had a studio in Salisbury where her black and white photos were tinted to add color. She was a natural born artist from childhood and could draw and paint pictures. Her mother Mary helped her at the phototography studio.

Daughter Christine Carlstead attended Southwest Missouri and taught school. She married A.D. (Archibald Duke) Van Deventer after her mother Mary passed away.

Christian's Military Service: Pvt. Civil War, Missouri Militia, Company C, 46th Regiment E.M.M.

Note about Christian's Grave Stone and the Burckhartt Family: The grave stone photo on this page is Christian's original grave stone located on the old Judge Burckhartt farm east of Huntsville. A biography of Judge Burckhartt is posted online at the Historic Huntsville History web site. It is possible that Christian Carlstead lived on the Judge Burckhartt property either before or during the time Judge Burckhartt lived there. Christian's birth and death dates are also shown on his wife Mary (Klink) Carlstead's grave stone at the Salisbury City Cemetery, Salisbury, Missouri. Mary moved from the farm at Mt. Arie near Moberly, MO to a farm at Salisbury, MO after Christian passed away. A special thanks to Find A Grave member Nancy Meadows for finding and photographing Christian's grave for us.
