John Henry "Bunk" Jones, 78, died Friday at the Candler County Hospital after an extended illness.

The Laurens County native had resided in Bulloch County for 51 years. He was chairman of the deacon board and Sunday school superintendent of the Hutchinson Longstreet Baptist Church. He was also president of the Mill View Choir Festival, president of the program committee, father of the W.M.B.S. Society and was in the foster parent program for 22 years in Bulloch County. He was retired from the Bulloch County School System.

Survivors are his wife, Arthur Mae Jones, Brooklet; four daughters, Betty Marie Epps, Palmsdale, Calif., Sue Elizabeth Collins, Patterson, N.J., Mary Jones and Lyndal Denise Gordon Jones, both of Brooklet; seven sons, Robert Arthur Jones, Jacksonville, Fla., Roy Jones and Charlie Jones, both of Patterson, N.J., Russell Jones, Denver, Colo., Johnny Jones, Statesboro, Edward Jones, Swainsboro, and Jerry Jones, Brooklet; three sisters, Ellen Melvin, Brooklet, Essie Mae Jones, Norwich, Conn., and Clara Perry, Baltimore, Md.; a brother, David Jones, Waycross; 21 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

The funeral service will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Hutchinson Longstreet Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Hall officiating. Burial will be in the Cone Cemetery.
