James Thorp moved to Young County in 1857 according to Post Returns at Fort Belknap. He was in the Shackelford, Young and Throckmorton counties.

James Thorp married Elizabeth Frans on 29 August 1861 at Young County, Texas. Book A, Volume 1, page 30. Marriage was officiated by D.S. Nance, minister of the Gospel

On 25 April 1864, J.L. Thorp built a blacksmith shop at Fort Davis, Stephens County, Texas according to Samuel Newcomb diary. The family left to visit the Thorp families on 6 July 1865. The Newcomb diary states that the family was back at Fort Davis on 11 August 1865.

At Fort Davis, Thorp helped his father-in-law, Madison Frans with the stage coach that came through the area.

In 1876, J.L. Thorp was granted 160 acres of land in Shackelford County recorded in said county on 21 July 1877.

Blacksmith / Wheelwright, cattle rancher, raised sheep

Invented the first hand-lift jack made in the United States. Received a patent for the jack.

J.L. Thorp, was a jeweler in Seymour, Texas in 1895 but left there in 1900 heading to Throckmorton.
