Civil War: Company F, 24th Massachusetts Infantry

Born at Santa Bárbara, Alta California, México, on July 1, 1842, he was baptized Juan Jones y Carrillo at the Santa Bárbara Presidio Chapel on July 11, 1842 (BP Baptism 01500). According to his baptismal record he was the son of Juan Jones (John Coffin Jones, II) (BP Baptism 01263) and Manuela Antonia Carrillo y Castro (BP Baptism 00566). Following the invasion of Mexico early in 1846, and soon after the occupation of Alta California by U.S. forces in July of that same year, the Jones family sailed for Boston, Massachusetts, where Juan assumed the English version of his name, John Coffin Jones, Jr.* John was a 19-year-old clerk residing at Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, when he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant on September 2, 1861. He was mustered into Company F, 24th Massachusetts Infantry, on September 14, 1861. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant September 27, 1862. Shortly after being promoted to captain on September 2, 1864, John resigned his commission on October 14, 1864, and returned home to Boston. He married Ella Maria Sumner (Mar. 31, 1845, MA) at Boston June 20, 1866, and appears there as a stockbroker in the 1880 U.S. Census.
