Children:
1. Sarah Tillinghast b: 17 NOV 1654
2. John Tillinghast b: 01 JUL 1657
3. Mary Tillinghast b: AUG 1659
NOTE: Older resources suggest she was Sarah Butterworth, but this has not been proven, and, in one instance, has been debunked. In some sources she is called the daughter of Henry Butterworth and Mary (Longbotham) Butterworth, but that Sarah(?) appears to have been born four years before Henry and Mary were married. A Wikitree entry appears to be a bit more plausible, though it is unsourced --- it states that Sarah (Butterworth) Tillinghast is probably Sarah Butterworth (baptized May 1631, Halifax, Yorkshire), daughter of James Butterworth (brother of Henry Jr.). Therefore, she would have been a niece (not daughter) of Henry Butterworth Jr. and Mary Longbothom.
From The Tillinghasts in America - The First Four Generations by Wayne G. Tillinghast:
"Elder Pardon Tillinghast, the son of Pardon and Sarah (Browne) Tillinghast, was born at Severn Cliffs near Beachy Head, now Eastbourne, Sussex County, England, about 1622...He married first ___ Butterworth. [3] There are serious doubts as to whether her name was 'Sarah,' as suggested by some writers, and unresolved questions as to whether she was born in 1623 or 1633 , and whether she died in 1660 or 1661. In any event she died at Newport, certainly prior to 16 April 1664, the date of Pardon's marriage to Lydia Taber [Tabor]..."
[3]...[Several authors] reported the first wife was born in 1623 and died in 1660...the bride's first name was 'Sarah'...the daughter of John Butterworth... An article by John Osborne Austin refutes Rose's assertion and establishes that Sarah the daughter of that John Butterworth married William Hayward...While neither of the two married children of Pardon's first marriage named a daughter 'Sarah,' yet each named a daughter 'Mary,' which might suggest, in light of the customary naming patterns of the times, that their late mother, Pardon's first wife, was named 'Mary'."
