Gordon served as a Captain and Aircraft Commander on B-29 "Lady Hamilton II" #42-24542, 794th Bomber Squadron, 468th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Wayne County, Michigan prior to the war.

B-29 #42-24542 was part of mission #187 which was a mission to attack Osaka, Japan. This mission included "458" B-29's in the attack on Osaka itself and "16" B-29's attacking other targets. B-29 #42-24542 was one of " 10 " B-29's lost on this mission.

They took off, with a crew of 11, from West Field, Tinian Island on a bombing mission over Osaka, Japan. They were last seen entering a cloud front 200 miles south of the Japanese main land and were not seen again. It is believed that the entire crew of " 11 " were lost at sea.

Gordon was declared "Missing In Action" in this loss during the war.

He was awarded the Air Medal with 1 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Purple Heart.
