B-29 #42-24741 was part of mission #187 which was a mission to attack Osaka, Japan. This mission included "458" B-29's in the attack on Osaka itself and "16" B-29's attacking other targets. B-29 #42-24741 was one of " 10 " B-29's lost on this mission.
They took off, with a crew of 11, from Saipan on a bombing mission over Osaka, Japan. About 10 minutes after take off their #2 engine caught on fire, their #3 engine was feathered, and their #4 engine was "sputtering". The pilot told the crew to "bail out" which everyone successfully was able to do.
The crew landed near a ship convey and one of ships was able to recover 10 members of the crew. " 9 " of them were alive with one crew member dead. The second crew members remains were never found.
Robert, whose remains were recovered, was "Killed In Action" in this ditching during the war.
He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
