Arthur served as a Captain & Pilot on B-29 #42-93995, 458th Bomber Squadron, 330th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Rapides Parish, Louisiana prior to the war.

B-29 #42-93995 was part of mission #187 which was a mission to attack Osaka, Japan. This mission included "458" B-29's in the attack on Osaka itself and "16" B-29's attacking other targets. B-29 #42-93995 was one of " 10 " B-29's lost on this mission.

B-29 #42-93995 took off, with a crew of 11, on a bombing mission over Osaka, Japan. Near the target they were hit by enemy flak which damaged the pilot compartment. The co-pilot, even though he was injured, was able to fly the B-29 back to Iwo Jima where the crew then bailed out. Arthur, however, was "killed" in this hit and he went down with the B-29 into the sea.

He was declared "Missing In Action" in this incident during the war. He was the only member of the crew not to survive.
