John McDill, son of Thomas and Margaret [née Chestnut] McDill, was born in Broughnow, County Antrim, Ireland. John's family immigrated to South Carolina aboard the ship "The JAMES AND MARY" one of the five ships with Rev. William Martin's Reform Presbyterians and the first to arrive. It departed Larne, Ireland and arrived in Charleston Oct. 18, 1772; after a voyage of seven weeks and one day. The Thomas McDill family received a land grant of 400 acres along Rocky Creek in what was then Craven County; later part of Chester & Fairfield Distrct, South Carolina.

During the American Revolution, John served with the South Carolina Militia under Capt. Alexander Turner, Capt. John Nixon, Col. John Winn, Capt. Samuel Adams, Col Lacy and Capt. Cooper. John received a pension for his service; which was granted in August 1833 of $29.00 annually.

Around 1790, John McDill married Miss Mary Brown, daughter of James Brown and Mary Mead [née Eaton] Brown. They had the following known children:

"Departed this life at his residence in Chester District, S. C. on the 3d of November, 1848 , Mr. John McDill, in the 88th year of his age. He was nearly the last of the Revolutionary patriots in his section of the country. … at the age of 17 he was a soldier in the army of the Revolution. … Ruling elder in Associate Reformed Church."

In John McDill's Last Will & Testament, signed May 30th 1836 and probated 13th of November 1848; John mentions all his surviving children and leaves them a portion of his estate. He appoints his son, James as the Executor.
