Thomas was the son of Thomas H. McDill & Margaret Chestnut McDill. He married Mary Young in South Carolina and they moved to Ohio about 1807. He settled on a farm on the west bank of Four Mile Creek not far from Hopewell Church. He was a charter member of Hopewell and was the first man buried in Hopewell Cemetery. He served in the War of 1812 and never recovered from illness contracted during the war.

His children were John, Thomas (married 1st Jennie McQuiston Caldwell, married 2nd Mary Agnes Paxton), Robert (married Mary Porter), Margaret C. (married Samuel Buck), David (married Elizabeth Foster), Andrew (married 1st Elizabeth Morrow, married 2nd Sarah Young, married 3rd Elizabeth Magaw), Elleanor (married William Millen), & James (married Charlotte Signor).
