Jesse Franklin Hodges was a son of William and Rebecca Hodges. He married a widow, Nancy Agnes (Pickett) Muir, 18 April 1844 in Scott County, Illinois. Nancy already had four children: Mirinda, George, Catherine and a son. Jesse and Nancy had six more together: Milton Warren, husband of Elizabeth Ann Hart; Samantha, called "Lucy", who married Josiah Hadley Smith; Malinda, known as "Dallia" and wife of Sylvester Moss Ash; Mary Adelaid, who married John V. or B. Hawkins; Ellis Franklin, who was married to and divorced from Mary Louisa Hoots; and Edgar Newton, husband of Leah Estelle Gross.

Jesse and Nancy apparently lived on land owned by his mother Rebecca until her death. After that, they lived for a time in Morgan County, Illinois, then followed their son Milton to Archie, Missouri. At the end of their lives, they lived in a two-room house on the same lot where Milton and his family resided.

Several branches of the family have recorded the date of Jesse's death, but his actual grave hasn't been found, nor has his wife Nancy's. They may be buried in Crescent Hill Cemetery, Cass County, Missouri, where their sons and their wives are.
