William Hodges was a very early settler in the part of Morgan County, Illinois, which later broke off as Scott County. He first appears in land records in 1827.
His widow Rebecca survived until 1863.
William's children were Elizabeth, who never married; James, a Civil War soldier who died in 1862; Jesse Franklin, who married a widow, Nancy Agnes Pickett Muir; Mary, married to Timothy Roark; and Emily, wife of Thomas Burbridge.
Jesse and Mary were the only ones of these children who had children themselves.
Jesse's were: Milton, husband of Elizabeth Hart; Samantha, who changed her name to "Lucy" and married Josiah H. Smith; Malinda, who called herself "Dallia" and married Sylvester Moss Ash; Mary, whose marriage to John Hawkins caused her to be estranged from her family; Ellis, married and then divorced from Mary Louise Hoots; and Edgar, who married Leah Estelle Gross. Milton moved to Cass County, Missouri, where he was a co-founder of the town of Archie. His parents and brothers followed him and lived out their lives there.
Mary was married to Timothy Roark, who died in 1845 leaving her with four young children: Matilda Francis; Julia Malvina, wife of Anton Brunbrauer; Martha L. who apparently didn't marry; and John Wilson, husband of Martha Jane Summers.
After Rebecca's death, Mary provided a home for her sister Elizabeth in the nearby town of Winchester.
