Mary was a daughter of William and Rebecca Hodges. She married Timothy Roark 8 December 1836 in Morgan County, Illinois. The marriage likely actually took place in what is now Scott County, since that County was formed from Morgan at a later time.

Mary and Timothy had four children: Matilda Frances; Julia Malvina; Martha L.; and John Wilson Roark.

Timothy died in 1845, and Mary was left to rear their very young children alone. She became a "tailoress" as she is described in the 1860 Scott County Census. After their mother died, her blind older sister, Elizabeth Hodges, lived with Mary and her children.
