Thomas wrote a witty and fascinating memoir in 1938 about his experiences growing up in the hills of Belmont County during the Civil War and the shenanigans that he shared with his brother, James Finley "Finn" Gallaher.

"May" first married Anna Crisswell, 25 Jan 1879, in Belmont County. They had these children:

(1) Otto Manford Gallaher b. 1880
(2) Caroline (Gallaher) Newman b. 1881
(3) Blanche (Gallaher) Lovejoy b. 1884
(4) JoAnn (Gallaher) Epler
(5) Gertrude (Gallaher) Murray

Anna died in 1889. Thomas married Elizabeth Jane "Jennie" Johnson, 9 Oct 1907, in Belmont County; she died 4 Dec 1908. The records show that he married a third time to Martha Woodburn, who died 11 Oct 1931 in Dilles Bottom. He married Mary Mitchell (White?), 23 Dec 1937, in Wheeling, WV. Mary survived him.

At various times, he was a coal miner, a farmer, and a carpenter; his death certificate stated that the last time he worked was 1942. Considering that he died in early January of 1942, he must have been a dedicated worker.
