William Gallaher was born in 1827 OR 1828 (records differ), the son of Mary (Talbert) and John A. Gallaher. He first married Caroline Wallace, 15 Sept 1852, in Belmont County. His brother, Thomas Coleman Gallaher, married Caroline's sister, Mary Jane Wallace, and the two couples settled near each other in Mead Township, Belmont County. William and Joseph were partners in their many enterprises: farming, boat building, carpentry, oil drilling, shipping on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, and military service in the Civil War.

William and Caroline had six known children:
(1) James Finley Gallaher b. 1853
(2) Thomas Maywood "May" Gallaher b. 1854
(3) Mary Evelyn "Eva" (Gallaher) Hoover b. 1857
(4) Clara Jane Gallaher b. 1860
(5) JoAnn Gallaher b. 1861
(6) Asa Benjamin "Ace" Gallaher b. 1875

Caroline died in 1876, and William married, second, Mary Steward of Beallsville, 8 May 1877, in Belmont County. They had two known children:
(1) Herschel Chalmer Gallaher b. 1878
(2) Laura (Gallaher) Yoho b. 1882

William's son, "May" Gallaher, in his memoir, recalled the day that his father and uncle put away their tools and enlisted in the Army. William served with his brother, Thomas, in the Company A, 25th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. William applied for a pension based on this service, and his file is available at the National Archives: Invalid Cert #351.171, Widow Cert. #519.209
