Henry was born in Sandusky, Ohio, on September 23, 1836, the son of William and Rosella Meeks Landers. He came to Bearcreek Township in Jay County in 1855, where he met Mary Armantrout, who was born in Darke County, Ohio, September 24, 1839, and whose parents were Charles and Susanna Michael Armantrout.
They also lived in Jay County. Henry and Mary where married on October 23, 1858, and he was a farmer in Bearcreek Township. During the Cival War he enlisted at the age of 26, on August 15, 1862 at Portland, Indiana in Company E, 89th Ind. He was wounded at Mumfordvile, Ky., and was taken prisoner in the same battle. Thirty days later he was paroled and joined his command in Indianapolis where was detailed several times as a train guard. His grandfather also, named Henry, had served in the Revolutionary War. Henry and Rosela where the parents of William, Martha, Charles, Christina, John and Rebecca, Isaac, and James Wilbert.
James Wilbert Landers was born March 3, 1873 and married Martha Pearl Chapman on April 29, 1904. She was on July 3, 1881, the daughter of Henry and Mary Chapman. James W. was employed by the Pennsylvnia Railroad for many years, living in Bryant, Jay County and Geneva, Adams County. Their children were Viola, who died in childhood; Glady, James Wilbert, Rozella and Romayne. Following is a short history of these children.
James W. was born in Bryant, Indiana on August 16, 1910. He married Jane McCurdy on May 25, 1936 and their children were James, Janice, John and Judy. Judy was born in Portland, July 3, 1937 and married Robert Doherty from Geneva, Indiana and later moved to Pennsylvania. Their children are Douglas, Kathy, Terry, Martha, Jane and Tammy, James Russel Landers was born in Portland on January 26, 1939 and married Grace Miao in Taiwan. They currently live in Honolulu, Hawaii, and have two children, Marcelle and Anthony. Dr. Landers teaches the Chinese language in the University of Hawaii. John A. Landers was born in Portland October 31m 1945. He married Ellen Rosta of Munster, Indiana on June 24, 1972. They have two children, Renee and Alan, and live in Indianapolis where John is branch manager of a Merchants National Bank. Judy Landers is the only one in this family to remain in Jay County. She was born May 21, 1947 in Portland and married Dick Corle on September 17, 1966. They have two daughters, Delayne and Christina. Judy is associated with her husband in his insurance agency, and they live Pike Township.
Rozella Landers married Raymond Overla.
Romayne Landers was born December 28, 1918 and married Truman Odle. They lived in Pike Township and are both deceased. They lived in Pike Township and are both deceased. Henry L. Landers, was born at Sandusky, Ohio, September 23, 1836, died at his home in Bryant, March 21. He was married to Mary L. Armantrout October 23, 1858, and to this union eight children were born. Mr. Landers enlisted August 15, 1862 as a private in company E, of the 89th Indiana Volunteer Infantry.
The funeral servies took place at the Weselyan Methodist church at Bryant, conducted by Rev. ?. Internment in the Daughtery Cemetery. J.L. Baird was the undertaker.
