Augustus C. Becker, one of the oldest policemen on the Des Moines force, was stricken with apoplexy while on duty Thursday night and died at Mercy hospital… It was shortly before midnight when the ambulance was called to the Great Western round house to take an […] to Mercy hospital. A moment after the wagon was started toward the hospital, Becker, who was driving the ambulance, was seized with a violent […] coughing. He fell forward in the seat and was only saved from falling under the wheels by the man at his side. He had been stricken with apoplexy and could not speak or move. The ambulance was turned back to the police station immediately and Dr. N. M. Smith was called. Immediately upon the arrival of Dr. Smith, Becker was sent to the hospital where he succumbed… Mr. Becker was night wagon man at the police station and also drove the ambulance at night… He leaves a wife and several grown children.”
