Louis H. Petrow, age 87, of Bridgeport, CT, husband of the late Pearl S. Petrow, died at his home. Louis was born and raised on a farm in Mansfield, CT, then moved to Bridgeport. Mr. Petrow was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and had served in Germany. In 1946 he married his beautiful Pearl. His work took him away at times, but when he came home, the weekends were totally devoted to his family. Every winter he would build an ice skating rink in the backyard for his children. The summers he spent with his children swimming in the pool and teaching his son, Ron, how to dive. He visited his mother every Sunday and made sure she was comfortable. Louis put family first at all times. When help was needed by anyone, he was the first one there. He didn't like to see anyone living alone, so he took care of both of his two separate neighbors until they died. He did all of this while taking care of his ailing wife too. His last remaining sibling up until last week was his sister, Millie, who was being taken care of for years by her son, John McMahon. Louis and John had each other to lean on when things got difficult with the care-giving. During Louis' battle with cancer, his niece, Penny, would visit every week, bringing delicious containers of home-made soup and other goodies, which he so appreciated. Before his illness, Louis loved to go fishing, even when his son-in-law, John, made him get up at 3:00 in the morning. His other love was playing chess. He played at the Monroe Senior Center with his brother-in-law, Mac McMahon. They helped to teach children how to play also. If there could be one last time to give advice, Louis would advise us to love one another, to listen, and do not judge. Louis is predeceased by his siblings, Stanley, Stella, Mary, Walter, and Amelia. He is survived by two beloved children and their spouses, Ronald Petrow and and his wife, Laura Gates of Stratford and Theresa Barry and her husband, John, of Orange; two loving grandchildren, Ian Petrow and Meghan Barry; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, Bridgeport. Interment with military honors.
