Riley Fremont Lawhead was born July 6, 1859, in Iowa City, Iowa. He was the fourth of six children born to Henry and Delilah (Thompson) Lawhead. His father died in the Civil War when he was only four years old, after which his family moved to Missouri. His mother died in Mercer County, Missouri when he was 19.

In 1879, Riley married Talitha Jane Chambers in Missouri. After the birth of their first child, Arba, they moved to Cainsville, Harrison County, Missouri, where they had three more children. Talitha died July 17, 1892.

After Talitha's death, Riley married Eva Andi Logan and they had four children: Arthur, Opal, Harry and Mabel in Cainsville, Harrison County, Missouri. Shortly after the turn of the century, Riley and Eva moved to Taylor, Stark County, North Dakota. He became very sick with pneumonia and went back to a doctor in Missouri where he died at the age of 42. He was buried next to his first wife, Talitha, in Missouri.

After Riley's death, Eva married Fred Pound with whom she had five children. The Pound family moved to California in the 1920s, where Eva died in 1941 and Fred in 1951.
