William was born 1728 - 31; died 1789 in Rowan Co North Carolina; married ca. 1755.
Without further documentation, William's wife's maiden name has not been completely proven. Shared family relationships exposed in documents /geographies are likely to be more than simple coincidence. The following information furthers the presumption based on significant circumstantial evidence that William Haden (d. 1789), married Unity Lane: b.ca. 1738; d.aft 1790; the d/o Edward La(y)ne Sr. & Elizabeth Dumas. Edward Lane: s/o Thomas Lane. Elizabeth Dumas: d/o Jerome Dumas & Unity Smith.

In the compilation by Floyd Benjamin Layne, entitled "Layne - Lain - Lane Genealogy: Being a compilation of names and historical information of male descendants of sixteen branches of the Layne-Lain-Lane . . . legal records and other available sources" . . . In Chap C - "Descendants of Thomas Lane/Layne of Hanover County" - pp 121-124, 130 . . . besides William & Unity, the Haden / Lane family tie extends to Unity Lane as a sister of Little "Berry" Henry Lane, who married Mary Jane Sand(r)idge and they had a son William Sandridge Lane, the husband of Nancy Haden (1780-1855), daughter of John Moseley Haden, a nephew of this memorial's William Haden. In other words, this William Haden's grandniece - Nancy Haden, married Unity Lane's nephew - William Sandridge Lane, too coincidental to ignore when exploring William's wife's maiden surname. Unity's brother Littleberry, also had a daughter named Unity Lane, who married her 1st cousin Stephen Rowe, son of William Rowe & Elizabeth Sandridge.

The Haden-Lane kinship tie is furthered where Unity's nephew William [Sandridge] Lane's home is the closest home located next to Mrs.. Haden, aka Margaret "Peggy" Douglas Haden, daughter of John Moseley Haden, sister of Nancy (Haden) Lane, who was William Haden's grand niece and also William Sandridge Lane's wife. This is supported by the 1850/60 censuses & 1863 map on John Moseley Haden's and his father's - John Haden Sr's. memorials, where found living next to each other are "Mrs. Haden" & "William Lane". The map shows their homes located in the same spot where John Haden Sr. built his home above the Rivanna River, on the "Dogspoint" tract that he purchased in 1765 from his daughter's father-in-law, Dr./Col. Arthur Hopkins Sr.

More credibility for Unity's maiden name being Lane is supported by a grand daughter of William and Unity, being named Unity Lane Marshall, through daughter Mary "Polly" (Haden) Marshall. Another granddaughter - Eunice Doomas "Unity" Bradshaw through William's and Unity's daughter Elizabeth (Haden) Bradshaw, shows a continuation of the Lane connection, with Doomas being the same surname as Unity (Lane) Haden's mother, Elizabeth Dumas.

The Douglas Register has "HARTON, WILL: & UNITY LANE married 19 Feb 1757". Another DR record for "WILL: HARTON & UNITY LANE a son named JEREMIAH, born on 19 Feb 1757 bapt 17 Apr 1757". The Rev. Douglas often listed the birth date of the first-born as the marriage date of the couple if he was not the one who performed the marriage ceremony. Worth noting, there are no other "HARTON" records in the DR, nor can any other record be found for any one of the three people named in the DR. More credibility adds to, HARTON should be HADEN, is based upon William receiving a gift of land from his father - Anthony, on 25 Nov 1755, quite plausibly a wedding gift that fits very well within the time frame of the DR record indicating Jeremiah's birth, 14 months later. It's very possible but unproven, Jeremiah died young and was the son of William Haden & Unity Lane.

★ 1765 Jul 14: William Haden to WILLIAM RAGLAND for £25, 150 acres WILLIAM HARRIS line . . . crossing the Southanna River to Harris's line . . . ELKANAH RAY's corner ...crossing the Southanna River . . . COL. THOMAS JOHNSON line. Signed: WILLIAM HADEN, UNITY HADEN. Witnesses: JAMES MERRIWETHER, WILLIAM HARRIS, ELKANAH RAY. Louisa Co, VA Deed Book C, p 52. This transaction supports the probability that William & Unity Haden had lived in Louisa County VA, for a period of time, before they moved to North Carolina. This 150 acres, was not the same land William's father gave to him, but this land was situated very close to the border of land owned by Edward Lane Sr, the likely father of Unity Lane. A deed from 12 Apr 1758, where Edward Clark of Bedford Co [sold] 788 acres of land to Edward Lane mentions borders/bounds of Ragland, the Southanna River & Elkanah Ray as did the above 1765 deed of William & Unity Haden, further supporting William being known to the Edward Lane Sr. family for at least 10 years prior to 1765.

★1767 Sep 17: Mathew Sparks & Sarah (Thompson) Sparks (sold) to WILLIAM HADEN for £150, 172 acres in THE FORK OF THE YADKIN RIVER adjacent WILLIAM SPARK's grant of 4 Apr 1767. Wit: Benjamin Taylor, James Whitiker. The previous sale for this property on April 4, 1767; was between MATTHEW SPARKS, who purchased 372 acres of land from John Carteret, the first Earl Granville & a great-grandson of Sir George Carteret - one of the original Lord Proprietors of the North Carolina Colony, who owned vast tracts of "vacant land" which he gradually sold to planters for relatively small sums. Matthew Sparks paid only ten shillings sterling for his 372 acres. The tract was located at the "fork" of the Yadkin River South Branch & Yadkin River Main Branch, a few miles south of Boone's Cave, close to where Squire Boone Sr. - father of Daniel Boone, first settled on after leaving Berks Co PA, between 1750-52. The Haden land tract was described as follows in the deed (see Rowan County Deed Book 4, page 514): "that tract or Parcel of Vacant Land, Situate Lying and Being in the Parish of St. Luke, in the County of Rowan, in the Said Province, LYING IN THE FORKS OF THE YADKIN RIVER, RUNNING UP THE SOUTH YADKIN N.20 x W.20 Chain to a hickery, then N.38.W.10 ch: to a Gum, then N.42.W.20 Ch: to a hickery, thence Due North, 90 chain to a black Oak, then Et. 40 Ch: to a White Oak on the Bank of the Main River, Then Down River to begining, Containing in Whole, Three Hundred and Seventy-two acres of Land."

The following tract would later be owned by William's brother - Joseph on 7 Nov 1777.
★ 1765 Apr 10: Regarding the other 200 acres ... On , MATTHEW SPARKS and SARAH SPARKS his wife sold 200 acres of this tract to WILLIAM SPARKS for £50 (Rowan Co DB 6, p 139). SPARKS sold this same tract of 200 acres to WILLIAM FROHOCK for 150 pounds on 27 Jan 1773 Rowan Co DB 8, p 104. William Frohock, who was a land speculator and politician, did not keep the 200 acres for very long, since he sold this tract to Joseph Haden on 7 Nov 1777 .

Gratitude and credit to Kay Haden for her insightful compilation, Leaves of the Tree where she has documented in expanded detail upon Dorothy Kabler Haden's work, John Haden of Virginia (1968). Much of this biography incorporates Kay's thorough analysis of facts and tradition, which has been instrumental in narrowing down the resting place of William Haden and his kin.

Biography compilation by 5X great grandnephew, Mark Hayden.

The Rev.

Gravesite Details

This family plot is forgotten and grown over. NC land records provide a clue with 2 small acre purchases (likely cemeteries) at "the point" by the 372 acres William & Joseph owned & the 500 acres, William's son, Douglas Haden owned.
