William A. Sands Jr., 90, formerly of Connersville, passed away on Monday, January 15, 2018, at Maple Park Village in Westfield, Indiana. He was born on November 11, 1927, in Knoxville, TN, and is the son of William A. Sands Sr. and Nellie Coffman Sands. On June 3, 1951, he married Vera Ronan in Connersville. They shared almost 67 years together. He served with the United States Army from 1946 to 1948 and was part of the occupation forces in Japan.
He worked for Roots Blower for 39 years before he retired in 1991. He was a member of UAW Local 1118 and held numerous offices, as well as the editor of the Impeller for 27 years. William belonged to the AMVETS, AARP, and the Moose Lodge. For many years he was a volunteer driver for the VA and the senior center. In his free time, he enjoyed umpiring for the little league teams. It was also tradition for him to play whiffle ball with his brothers every weekend. When it came to sports, he would always cheer for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Tennessee Volunteers. He and Vera liked to travel together, especially when they went to Hawaii for their 25th wedding anniversary.
He is survived by his wife, Vera; three daughters, Cynthia (Terry) McCormack, of Petersburg, MI, Rebecca (Johnny) Johnson, of Connersville, and Jennifer (Robert) Kalem, of Fishers; a brother, Robert Sands, of Cambridge City; six grandchildren, Dustin McGillem, Devon McGillem, Joshua McCormack, Angela Schuricht, Brooke Kessinger, and Britny McGillem; along with eight great-grandchildren, David, Alaina, Cole, Scarlett, Lincoln, Colton, Mason, and Hudson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Charlie Sands and Don Sands, and a sister, Lucille Nicholson.
Services for William will be held on Saturday, January 20, 2018, at 1:00pm, at Urban-Winkler Funeral Home, Connersville, with his daughter, Cynthia officiating. Burial with military graveside services presented by the Fayette County Honor Guard will follow at Dale Cemetery. Friends and family may visit at the funeral home on Saturday from 11:00am until 1:00pm. Memorial contributions may be made at the funeral home to the Fayette County Senior Center.
