George Alig, 74, died Saturday morning, Aug. 1, at the Fonda Care Center after a long illness. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church, Fonda, with the Rev. Edward Murray officiating. Burial was in Mount Zion Cemetery, Fonda.

He is survived by sons, Jack Alig and Nick Alig, both of Greeley, CO; one grandchild; a brother, Clem Alig, Pocahontas; and sisters, Mrs. Donald (Eldora) Francis and Mrs. Al (Luella) Vodraska, both of Pocahontas, and Mrs. Harold (Arvilla) Porath, Watertown, SD.

He was born in Pomeroy and received his education in Ware schools. He married Marcella Reis in 1935 at Varina. They farmed in the Pocahontas area for many years. They moved to the Fonda area in 1940 and farmed northwest of town until 1967, when they moved into town. The couple owned and operated the Checkerboard Cafe from 1966 to ’68. She died in 1973. In 1984, he entered the Fonda Care Center.
