Van attended and graduated from Balko ISD, and on February 27, 1952 he married Dorothy Purer. They made their home in the Balko area where he farmed and ranched; and also worked as a rural route mail carrier for sixteen years and retired in 1992. Van was active in the Balko Lions Club, Balko FFA and a member of Booker Christian Church. Outside of his work Van spent his time reading books of old pioneer times from authors like Lewis L'Amour, but it was camping and traveling in his RV that brought him the most enjoyment.
Van passed away Monday August 27, 2012 in Spearman; he is preceded in death by his parent’s four brothers Allen, Bob, Pete, and Willard, and a sister Edna Mae. Memorial services will be Friday August 31 at 2:00 PM in the Booker Christian Church with Pastor Chuck Lightfoot officiating; services are under the direction of Good Samaritan Funeral Service and Chapel Booker, TX.
Survivors include his wife Dorothy, two sons Audie (Karla) Bartel and Steven Bartel; four grandchildren Shanna (Kyle) Cunningham, Rebecca Pauley, Colton (Morgan) Bartel, and Quinton Bartel; and three great grandchildren Brooklyne, Bailee, and Caleb.
The family requests memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or the Balko Lions Club in care of Good Samaritan Funeral Service P.O. Box 341 Booker, TX 79005.
