Rupert Hall “Monk” Chittum, 88, of Riverview Drive, Morgantown, Died Wednesday, Jan. 25, 1995, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, after a brief illness. He was born April 18, 1906, in Petoskey, Mich., son of the late George D. and Edna Mae Hall Chittum. He was a member of Drummond chapel United Methodist Church for more than 50 years. He graduated from Morgantown High school, where he played football and was a wrestler. He and his father owned and operated Chittum Livery Stable where the Downtown PRT Station now stands. He worked at DuPont and Olin Mathias Ordnance Works at the MOW. He also worked with WVU Athletic Department and retired from Morgantown Transfer Co. after 40 years. He was a member of the Teamsters Union. He was a veteran, serving with the U.S. National Guard Cavalry Unit, Fort Knox, Ky. He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Grace Baker Roberts Chittum; a son, David Hall Chittum of Fairmont, a daughter, Ruth Dille Chittum of Morgantown; three stepsons, Robert R. Roberts of Falls Church, Va., Dr. Thomas D. Roberts of Tulsa, Okla., and Richard C. Roberts of Morgantown; two brothers, George Chittum, Jr. and Robert Chittum, both of Morgantown; sister, Helen Chittum Elderkin of Stevenson, Md;, two adopted grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Dille Chittum. Friends may call at Hastings Funeral Home from 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, time of service with the Rev. William Kinsey officiating. Burial will be in Mount Union Cemetery, Point Marion Road. Donations may be made in his name to National Arthritis Foundation, 1314 Spring Street, NW, Atlanta, GA.
