David Hall Chittum, 77, of Fairmont, passed away Wednesday (Oct. 8, 2008) at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. He was born Oct. 5, 1931, in Morgantown, a son of the late Rupert and Mary Dilli Chittum. Mr. Chittum was employed at West Virginia University as supervisor of custodians at Towers Dormitory until he retired in 1993. Upon his retirement, he worked for several years as a crossing guard for Barnes School. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and was also an elder. He was a 1949 graduate of Morgantown High School. He was a charter member of the Monongalia County EMS, and a member and assistant chief of the Marion County Rescue Squad. He also volunteered for the American Red Cross and traveled with the Red Cross in disaster situations. In his free time, he enjoyed his camp at Big Bear Lake. Survivors include his wife of over 30 years, Janet Knight Chittum of Fairmont; four daughters, Rebecca Nicholson of Morgantown, Mary Wurth of Fairmont, Alisa Smith of Princeton and Jennifer Smith of Charleston; one sister, Ruth D. Chittum of Fairmont; and five grandchildren, Daniel Wurth, Erik Nicholson, Andrew Nicholson, Megan Nicholson and Breanna Akers. He is also survived by special friends, Ralph and Connie Straight of Fairmont. Friends may call from 6-9 p.m Saturday and noon-3 p.m. Sunday at the Ford Funeral Home, R.C. Jones Chapel, 1410 Country Club Rd., Fairmont. Services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with Lay Minister Judy Shaver officiating. Private interment will follow at the Grandview Memorial Gardens in Fairmont. Memorial contributions may be made to the North Central West Virginia Chapter of the American Red Cross, 401 First St., Fairmont, WV 26554.
