He was born May 16, 1911, in Monongalia County, son of the late George David Chittum, Sr. and Edna May Hall Chittum.
He was a partner in the Morgantown Transfer and Storage Co. which was located on University Avenue. He served from 1936-194l with the Civilian Conservation Corps. He served in the U.S. army from April 194l-1947 and a World War II veteran. He continued to serve in The Army reserves until his retirement in 1971, at which time he held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
He was a member of Odd Fellows Lodge 70 of Morgantown and was a life member of BPO Elks Lodge 411 of Morgantown, the Greenbrier Military School Alumni Association of Uniformed Services, and VFW Post 9916 of Westover. He was a member of the WVU Alumni Association and Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity, and was a charter member of Beaumonte Dance Club.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Valentine Chittum; two sons, George David Chittum III, of Morgantown, and Martin A. Chittum, of Tipton, Ind., a brother John R. Chittum, of Morgantown, a sister, Helen Elderkin, of Baltimore, three grandsons and a granddaughter.
He was proceeded in death by a brother, Rupert H. Chittum.
Friends may call at Hastings Funeral Home for 7-9 pm Monday, and 10-11 a.m Tuesday, March 19, time of service with the Rev. Dr. Stacy L. Groscup officiating. Cremation service will follow.
