William Dickinson Gaston, the youngest child of Judge James B. Gaston and Janie [née Bentley] Gaston, was born on May 13th 1903 in Gainesville, Georgia. Judge Gaston had been mayor of Gainesville from 1880 to 1882 and served as a Federal judge for over 30 years.

William was educated at Stanton Military Academy and a graduate of the University of Georgia. He married Miss Fredna Clay Monzingo, daughter of Samuel W. and Susan "Sudie" Monzingo, on June 5th 1930 in San Antonio, Texas. Here they made their home and raised two children:
