Boals-Markley

One of the first of summer weddings took place in the Westminster Presbyterian Church, Saturday afternoon, at one-thirty o'clock when Helen Caroline, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arundel Markley, of West Chester Gardens, became the bride of James Lasalle Boals, 3rd, son of James L. Boals, Jr., 417 Price Street. The single ring ceremony was performed by Rev. Robert B. Boell, pastor, in the presence of relatives and many friends.

The bride, a graduate of West Chester High School and State Teachers College, is a teacher in the public schools in Malvern. A graduate of the local high school, the bridegroom was in the U.S. Army for three years, serving 19 months overseas in the Office of Strategic Services. He plans to attend the University of Pennsylvania. beginning July 1st.

James La Salle Boals, III, 91, of Willow Valley Retirement Community, Lancaster, Pa., died Jan. 21, 2014.

He was son of James L. Boals, Jr. and Elinore Milford Knox, and husband of Helen Caroline Markley Boals.

Born in Philadelphia, he graduated from the Demonstration School of West Chester (1934), and West Chester High School (1940). He attended Wharton Evening School of Accounts and Finance (1941-42), the Engineering School of University of Wisconsin in the Army Specialized Training Program (ASTP) (1943-44), and graduated from University of Pennsylvania Wharton School (1948) with a B.S. in Economics. Jim's attempted enlistment in the Navy and Army Air Forces in 1942 failed because of eye problems. He waited until being drafted in Jan. 1943, when he was sent to Officer Candidate School (Battery E-29) in Fort Sill, Okla. When that school closed, he was sent to ASTP, and when that school closed, he volunteered for hazardous duty in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). There, he served 19 months in the European Theater where he was the cryptographic contact between President Roosevelt and "Wild Bill" Donovan. Early employment included Frank's Bakery, Daisy Jamison Antiques, Ford Motor Company, ESCO Cabinet Company, Empire Milking Machine Company, Paul Morrow, Inc., Schramm, Inc., and West Chester Ford. He had a 36-year career with The DuPont Company, retiring in 1984. He moved to Willow Valley in 1994. Jim was elected inspector of election, judge of election, and auditor of West Goshen Township, and was a member of many civic and community organizations including Boy Scouts of America (Life Scout/Order of the Arrow), the State Band of Pennsylvania (1940), Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 106 (charter member), American Legion Post 134, West Chester Masonic Lodge 322 (F&AM), Chester County Hospital Foundation, West Chester Fish, Game, and Wildlife Association, First Presbyterian Church and choir, Westminster Presbyterian Church and choir, West Chester Bowmen's Club, National Rifle Association, Ulster Historical Foundation, World Ancestry.com, Chester County Historical Society, and DuPont Country Club. He served as treasurer of West Chester Exchange Club, board member and treasurer of Sunny Crest Farm for Boys, assistant Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 43, chairman of Westminster Cub Scout Pack Committee, American Red Cross Life Saver, Sunday school treasurer, vice president of West Chester Henderson PTA, and Chester County Library volunteer. He is survived by his wife of 67 years; sons, Stephen Markley Boals of New York, and Gregory Knox Boals of Florida. Services will be private. Donations may be made to Willow Valley Fellowship Fund, Boy Scouts of America, or the Greater Pennsylvania Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association .
