The son of Jacob & Catherine Elizabeth (Mohn or Moore) Shuey, in 1860 he was a carpenter presumably living in or near Derry Township, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, although he is not found in that census. He stood 5' 6" tall and had dark hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted in Ickesburg, Perry County, June 29, 1863, during the Gettysburg crisis, mustered into state service at Harrisburg July 2 as a private with Co. E, 36th Pennsylvania Militia, and honorably discharged with his company August 11, 1863.
2. Enlisted in Harrisburg March 14, 1865, mustered into federal service there March 16 as a private with the 101st Pennsylvania Infantry in the second organization of Co. D, and honorably discharged with his company June 25, 1865.

He married Sara C. Hoerner August 25, 1865, in Hummelstown, Dauphin County, and fathered Elizabeth (b. @1866), Jacob A. (b. 06/05/67), Sarah C. (b. 11/03/70 - married Wilson J. Cassel), Caroline (b. 01/11/72), and Eli Henry (b. 04/07/80). Cause of his death is listed as "exhaustion due to old age & uremia."
