MEXICO — Mrs. Mavis Austin Backus, wife of Richard Backus, died in Oswego Hospital last night after an illness of two months. She was 85 years of age. Mrs. Backus was born in 1874 in DePeyster, St. Lawrence County, daughter of the late Levi D. and Sarah Rart Austin and was married in 1895. having resided in Mexico for the past 52 years. She was a member of the Presbyterian church in Mexico and the St. Lawrence chapter O.E.S. of DePeyster. Surviving, besides her husband, are three sons, R. Austin Backus and J . Herbert Backus of Mexico and Reginald D. Backus of New Haven; two daughters. Marian F. and A. Arloine Backus of Mexico. Another son, J.W. Backus, died in 1957. Funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 14. at
2:30 p. m in the family home Rev. Donald Roth, minister of the Presbyterian church, officiating. Burial will be in Mexico Village Cemetery.
