Richard Vollins Backus passed away Friday morning June 5 at 4:05 a. m. in the Oswego Hospital after a brief illness.
He was born June 16, 1872 in Heuvelton, St. Lawrence County eldest son of Joseph William and Ann Jane Woodside Backus. He was educated in the Heuvelton schools and was also a graduate of Albany Business School. Mr. Backus ran a grocery, furniture , and clothing store in Heuvelton,then he became a farmer. He was a retired farmer and a breeder and lover of Holstein Cattle.
Mr. Backus married Mavis F. Austin on June 19, 1895 in Depeyster.
She passed away December 11, 1959. He moved to Mexico with his family on May 1, 1907 after purchasing the Ed. Everts farm west of the village. In 1926 they moved to Prattham where they lived until 1935, then moving to the village where he has since resided. Mr. Backus was a member of the Mexico Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by two daughters Miss Marion F. Backus and Miss A. Arlene Backus and two sons J. Herbert Backus, all of Mexico, and Reginald D. Backus, New Haven. Eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, two brothers, Chester and Fred Backus both of Heuvelton, several nieces and nephews, also cousins.
Funeral services were held Monday, June 8 at 2 p.m. at the family home on East Main Street. The Rev. Donald Roth officiated. Burial was in the family plot in Mexico Village Cemetery. Bearers were John Castle, Earl Everts, Leon Price , Francis Smithers, Leon Hurlbut and West Ackley.
