Reginald Dart Backus, 95, formerly of Mexico, NY, died peacefully on October 12, 2007, at the home of his daughter in Syracuse, NY, where he had recently resided. He was born and raised in Mexico, NY. He attended and graduated from Mexico Academy. He worked for GLF (Agway) for a few years in different locations throughout the state, returning to Mexico in 1945 to work with his brothers, Austin and Jay Backus, at Mexico Lumber and Coal. He bought his own business in the late 50's, Mexico Feed and Supply. He was predeceased by his first wife, Thelma, in 1969. Surviving: wife of 37 years, Wava Backus; one daughter, Roxann (Ed) Fintel of Syracuse; two sons, Justin Backus of Kemmerling, Colorado, and David (Ellen) Backus of Mesa, Arizona; one stepdaughter, Donna Sweet; one stepson, Ronald Watson; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, October 20, 2007, at Harter Funeral Home, 9 Washington Ave., Mexico, NY. Burial will be in Mexico Village Cemetery. There are no calling hours. Contributions may be made to Hospice of Central New York, 990 7th North St., Liverpool, NY 13088.
