"A Melancholy and Fatal Accident. Yesterday afternoon, word was brought to Coroner Letterman's office, that a young man named Guadalupe J. Cooper, aged about nineteen or twenty years, had accidentally shot himself at the residence of his father, John B. R. Cooper, on Bush street, between Mason and Taylor. From all that we have been able to learn, it would appear that young Cooper went into the yard in the rear of the house, for the purpose of cleaning a Colt's five-barreled revolver; while doing so, in examining the chambers, one of them exploded, the ball entering his mouth and lodging in the brain. The report of the pistol was heard by the people in the vicinity, at about half-past two o'clock, but nothing was at the time thought of it. Subsequently the body was found by one of the servants, who had occasion to visit the stable. The Coroner will hold an inquest. There is every reason to believe that this melancholy case was purely one of accident. The sad affair has cast a gloom over a large circle of warm and devoted friends of the deceased and his honored family. We tender them our sincere sympathies in this their hour of affliction and bereavement. His father is one of the oldest residents of this State." ~Daily Examiner, S.F., Sep. 9, 1869, p. 3
