"Captain John B. R. Cooper died at his residence in San Francisco last evening, after a slight illness, produced by a shock to his system in jumping from a carriage....Captain Cooper was a good, kind-hearted man of the highest integrity. For his age, he was remarkable for his activity, and a few days ago looked as ten or twenty years might be added to his life. He was...esteemed by all who knew him. He will be buried to-morrow at one o'clock [P. M.], from St. Mary's Cathedral." ~Daily Examiner, S.F., Feb. 10, 1872, p. 2
