It is said that Robert moved from Lincoln County, Tennessee with his wife Lucinda Durley Holcomb to Lafayette County, Mississippi. Here several of there children were born before they moved to Houston County, Texas.

On the 1870 Houston County Census we find three of Holcomb Family members, all living next door to each other, Steve age 32 and Mary Holcomb Vaughan age 27 both born in Mississippi, Robert Nelson Holcomb age 69 born in Tennessee, is found living with his daughter Mary and her husband Steve. Robert Nelson died a short time after the Census. The next household we find AA Holcomb age 25 born in Mississippi; the next household we find RN Holcomb age 34 born in Mississippi living with his sister Hulda age 27 born in Mississippi. These are all Robert Nelson Holcomb's children. We do not find the other children on the 1870 Houston County Census.

Lucinda Durley and Robert Holcomb, who married in 1820, were the parents of: Huldah J, John Kinchen, Virginia, Sarah, Lucinda, Robert Nelson Jr, Mary C, Alfred Augustus and Marsona.
