Susan Izora Griffin Presley was the first wife of Noah Edward Presley.
Noah and Susan married 10 JUL 1910 in Itawamba Co., MS.
Susan is my great-grandmother.

Per family records, Susan had three children WITH Noah prior to their marriage.

Susan was several years older than Noah and lived at home with her father and mother with the babies. When they did marry, the oldest child, Sump, chose to keep the Griffin name. My grandmother, Ethel Presley, told me that Sump chose to keep the Griffin name after his mother married Noah Presley. The younger two boys were named by their father and mother, Noah and Susan, with the Presley name. The naming information is listed in the Census.

How did Noah meet Susan? Tom Hussey looked after Noah as a father would on a young man. When Tom would ride past the Griffin household to get to his cows in the pasture, he often had Noah with him. Noah and the future Mrs. Noah Presley (Susan Griffin) began a friendship. At Tom's urging, and after the third child, out of wedlock, Noah married Susan. This is how the "out of wedlock" children get misconstrued as "not Noah's". Noah was about five years younger than Susan. If you are from the old South, you would know that courting and relationships started at a young age. A young age can be defined as around age 13.

It is my belief that Benjamin Jefferson Griffin is Susan's great grandfather, but I will have to continue research.

Father: William Lafayette Griffin, b. May 1835, age 65, farmer, born Mississippi; parents both born in Tennessee.
Mother: Jane Griffin, b 1853, 17 years younger than her husband
Stepmother: Martha L. Griffin, the former M.L. Minyard, b. December 1835, age 64, born in Alabama, parents both born in South Carolina.
Grandfather: Joseph Griffin, b NC
Grandmother: Jane Griffin, b TN 1813

Per Susan's obituary:
Susan's sister: Mrs. Hugh Brooks, of Plantersville, MS, (female) October 1877

Susan's sister: Mrs. Allie David Ryan (female) of Guntown, MS October 1885 age 15

Susan's sister: Jos T. (Female)

Per census:
Susan's Nephews:
Tracy N. (male) March 1897 age 3
Elbert O. (male) May 1899 age 1

Susan's first child, a son:
Sumpter David Griffin (male) September 1899 age 9 months.

Per the 1900 census, Susan was born Nov 1881, age 18, single, she was a farm laborer, living and working for her dad, stepmother, siblings, nephews and child. Susan could read, write and speak English, and had one child Sumpter, while living with her in her parents' home.

Per the 1900 US Census, Susan was born NOV 1881, however, the grave marker states
"22 MAR 1882".

Per the 1910 census, Clay, Itawamba Co., MS., Susan had two additional children and was listed as head of household. The three male children were Sump 1899, Whit 1902 and Eack 1906. The census also states that she owned her home and was a farm laborer, most likely for her father.

These three children were the sons of Noah E Presley, prior to their marriage in 1910. As the oldest, Sump would maintain the name Griffin throughout his life, while the two younger boys would maintain the name Presley throughout their lives. This was Sumpter's choice since he was older when his parents married and had been known as Sumpter Griffin by friends and family for years prior to their marriage, as told to me by my grandmother, Ethel Presley.

Per the 1920 US Census, Susan's family was living next door to her and Noah, with Susan's siblings, Nathaniel, Joe T., Elbert, Sister, Ethel and Lonie.

There is a trail that I am researching:
William Eckford purchased land when Benjamin J Griffin purchased land.
If there is no relation to the Eckford family, there was clearly the knowledge of each other socially.
William Eckford was a very wealthy Scotsman that bought several sections of Itawamba County, MS land.

William Eckford purchased on 15 JUN 1843, Document Number 13598, Sec 22, SE1/4, TWN-RNG 008S-009E , Chickasaw Meridian, 159.91 acres, Itawamba Co., MS.

Benjamin J Griffin purchased on 30 DEC 1844, Document Number 17307, Sec 7, NW 1/4, TWN-RNG 008S-009E, Chickasaw Meridian, 159.75 acres, Itawamba Co., MS.

Per the newly found obituary discovered in my grandparents', Eack and Ethel Presley's Bible, Susan had a week long illness and passed at home with Noah.
