All information in this memorial are from the original Find A Grave Memorial #102412003 SUMPTER DAVID GRIFFIN created 20 DEC 2012 by Suzanne E Presley.

Sumpter (Sump) David Griffin was the biological son of Noah Edward Purcell and Susan Izora Griffin Presley. Sump was NOT a stepson to Noah. Noah and Susan had three children before they married.

As told to me by Sump's family, he was devastated when he heard the RUMOR that he was not Noah's child. I will do everything in my power to protect Sump, Eack and Whit from the horrible rumors spread that hurt them as young boys and men.

Of all of Noah and Susan's children, Sump the oldest, chose to be buried with his wife and daughter, where Noah is also buried with his wife and daughter.

Sump married Mary Lillian Millwood. Lillian was known to those who loved her as "Bill".

Sump and Bill lived in Cedar Hill, Texas and had several children.

1. Herman Clint Griffin, b. 03 AUG 1924, Tupelo, Lee Co., MS d. 10 JUL 1981 Cedar Hill, TX
2. Harriette Phebble Griffin, b. 27 JAN 1927, Tupelo, Lee Co., MS, d. 26 MAR 1928, Tupelo, Lee Co., MS
3. Oma Mazelle Griffin Taylor, born 6 SEP 1928; died 19 OCT 2005.

Sump was one of nine children. Sump chose to use the name Griffin, his mother's maiden name. Reference 1900 U.S. Census and Reference 1910 U.S. Census.

Also, confirmed by a conversation with my grandmother, Ethel Presley, married to Trannie Eackford Presley, brother to Sump, that because Sump had used the name Griffin for several years before Noah married Susan, he chose not to change his name to Presley. Noah and Susan also had two additional biological sons born before they were wed. The other two sons' names were changed from Griffin to Presley, after Noah and Susan married. Susan lived at home with her father and mother WITH the babies. Noah was too young to wed, as Susan was about 9 years older. Noah and Susan had to wait to marry.

The 1920 Census is incorrect in stating that Sumpter was a stepson. He was a biological child of Noah and Susan Presley. I will attempt to have this corrected.

I think assumption of step children and half brothers/half sisters has led to this confusion.

Sump was also half brother to the children of the second marriage of Noah Edward Purcell Presley to Mary Christine Houston Roberts Presley, including Harold Ray Presley, former Sheriff of Tupelo, MS.

And so to me, it was Uncle Sump and Aunt Bill. They were my favorites when I was just a little girl. Aunt Bill had a collection of tiny figurines on her novelty shelf from places she visited and gifts from friends. The last time I saw Uncle Sump was at Noah Presley's house in Tupelo, MS.

CONTRIBUTOR NOTE FOR CLARIFICATION: MemphisGirl refused to delete or transfer the duplicate memorial 184978606 she created of Sump Griffin, as a "row mower", to Suzanne E. Presley, original contributor. In turn, MemphisGirl had to abide with my request (Georgia Griffin) for transfer of this memorial as I am a descendant and she is not. Georgia requested the merge of the original memorial with the duplicate. F/G merged the incorrect memorial as the primary. Georgia transferred this memorial "back to" Suzanne E Presley, last update 9 NOV 2020, as it is truly her work. MemphisGirl wrote nothing in the content of the F/G Memorial #184978606. I consider MemphisGirl greedy and her efforts an attempt at theft of the primary contributor's work. She knew as a row mower to look for the primary memorial 102412003 and she chose to ignore. She knew as a contributor that she could have requested edits had there been any new information or edits. She chose to ignore my family's request to do the right thing.
