Ernest was the 3rd son of Henry Clay Backus and Ellen Johnson. He first married Aldora Maria Willey on the 24 Oct 1895 in Moretown, Vermont. They had a son, Guy Osman Backus who was born the 9 Apr 1896 in Rochester, Vermont. Aldora died less than a year after Guy was born from a stroke.
Ernest married Aldora's sister Lilla Hannah Willey on the 19 Jul 1899 in Moretown, Vermont.

It was after the death of Lilia that Mr. Backus came to Duxbury to live having purchased the so-called Fraser place. He was a lumber-mill worker and farmer all his life.
He is survived by his son, Guy of Syracuse, N.Y., by a grandson Robert Backus of Gossville, N.H., and a granddaughter Aldora, of Hartford, Conn., and by several great-grandchildren.
The funeral service was held in a Concord, N.H. funeral home. Those from the area who attended were Mrs. Lucia Griffith of Waterbury Center and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Backus of Waitsfield. Burial will be in the spring in South Duxbury Cemetery.
